POLICE did no arrest any of the organisers and participants of the #Tangkap Azam Baki rally and events linked to it, including a ceramah last night at a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, the Brickfields police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor said today.

He said about 40 people were present at the yesterday’s event, which was held without a police permit, at Restoran Amjal,. 

“A total of 12 activists were identified as present with the motive of inviting people to join in the #TangkapAzamBaki rally at the Bangsar LRT station today, but no arrests were made.

“The rally did not obtain a permit or permission from the authorities and the organisers also failed to send a notification to the police that a rally was being held,” Amihizam said.

Police were there but only to check the personal details of the people who were present, he said.

 “The case is being investigated under section 505 of the penal code for making statements that incite public mischief and section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to give notice of an assembly,” he said.

Yesterday, the organiser tweeted that police had raided the restaurant during the event and that people had been arrested.
 
“The #TangkapAzamBaki talk at Amjal Restaurant was raided by the police. Several people have been arrested.

“The talk were done when the raid took place, but participants were not allowed to leave the premises when they wanted to go home.

“Don’t arrest the people! #TangkapAzamBaki!,” read the tweet.

Muda vice-president Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier said she was was among those who were prevented from leaving the restaurant by police.

“Police stopped us from leaving Amjal Restaurants and asked for our identity card to record our details.

“So we’re still standing here and not allowed out.

“To be clear, they (police) did not allow us to leave this place,” she said in a tweet in the early hours today. – January 22, 2022.
