POLICE today said no foul play was involved in the death of a 37-year-old man in lock-up in Kota Baru, Kelantan.
Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Azri Ahmad said a post-mortem on the deceased was conducted yesterday at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab 2.
”The post-mortem concluded that there were no criminal elements involved in the case and the cause of death was water in the lungs.
“It has been classified as sudden death,” he said in a statement.
It was reported that the detainee died at the Pengkalan Chepa police station at 4.35pm on Saturday.
Azri said the victim was arrested for drug offences and remanded on Friday.
The remand order was to have expired tomorrow.
The case was filed under sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession and consumption of illicit drugs.
Azri today said police will continue investigations and present their findings to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
The death of the Kota Baru detainee came after a 63-year-old man died in the Taiping district police headquarters while awaiting a court hearing last Friday.
The victim was charged with motor vehicle theft and causing injury with a weapon on April 18 last year.
Following his death, two police officers and two inmates were arrested and in remand until Thursday. – January 18, 2022.
