More than 10 million Covid booster shots administered by next week

MORE than 10 million people in Malaysia would have had their Covid-19 booster shots by next week, Health Minister Khairy Jamaludin said.

“As at 11.59pm Thursday night, almost nine million boosters have already been administered,” he tweeted.
 
As a result of the accelerated booster programme and containment efforts, hospitals are operating within capacity despite a wave of imported Omicron cases, Khairy said.

In a follow-up tweet, he said daily infections had exceeded 3,000 before Sarawak started its booster programme in October

“We are now down to double-digit cases, with every indicator falling by more than 90% since September.”

As of yesterday, 22,901,050 people, or 97.8% of the adult population in the country are fully vaccinated. 

Government data on the CovidNow website showed 23,181,492 people, or 99% of the adult population have received at least one vaccine dose. 

Yesterday saw 3,246 new infections.

Selangor reported the highest number of cases at 1,006, followed by Johor (380) and Kuala Lumpur (280).

Other states that reported new cases were Kedah (178), Kelantan (270), Malacca (166), Negri Sembilan (157), Pahang (204), Perak (137), Perlis (15), Penang (198), Sabah (244), Sarawak (13), Terengganu (56) and Labuan (8) and Putrajaya (34).
