TWO policemen have been detained in connection with the death of a 63-year-old motor vehicle theft suspect at the Taiping district police headquarters in Perak, federal police said.
Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance department director Azri Ahmad said two other inmates at the lock-up were also detained for investigation.
“The investigation started on January 13, the day the inmate was found dead in the lock-up.
“The policemen and the two detainees were arrested and remanded until January 20,” Azri said.
The victim was charged with motor vehicle theft and causing injury using a weapon on April 18 last year.
He was taken from Taiping prison to the Taiping police lock-up for the first mention of his case on January 11. A second mention was supposed to be heard today.
Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin recently said that there were 82 deaths in custody reported between 2015 and Nov 2021.
The victims were comprised of 42 Malays, 13 Chinese, 15 Indians and 12 foreigners. – January 14, 2022.
