THE sanitary landfill in Jalan Byram, Pulau Burung, Nibong Tebal, caught fire today, involving an area of more than 8,000 sq m.

Nibong Tebal fire and rescue station operations officer Noor Asfariza Mohamad Abdul Kadir said the first fire engine went to the scene after the station received an emergency call at 5.12pm and found the blaze raging with thick smoke billowing.

“The department is still working hard to put out the fire using water from its fire engines and water tankers at 7.30pm,” she said when contacted today.

At present, about 8,360 sq m of the 10ha (40,460 sq m) of the garbage disposal site are on fire, she said. 

More than 50 officers and men from the Nibong Tebal, Sungai Bakap and Bayan Baru fire stations and volunteer fire-fighting teams are battling the blaze, she added. – Bernama, January 12, 2022.
