TWENTY-SIX drivers were held in a traffic operation, Ops Samseng Jalanan, last Saturday night in Malacca.

They include a factory worker only known as Aziz, 22, from Kedah, who was planning to go for a holiday in the historic city with his friends.

He was slapped with a RM900 summons for three road traffic offences involving the use of a fancy number plate, illegal vehicle modifications and driving with a non-functioning third brake light.

When met, Aziz said as a driving enthusiast, he had spent about RM10,000 of his savings to modify his Honda Civic.

“I just wanted to follow the trend and feel the satisfaction of being different but now I am discouraged,” he told reporters while waiting for his car to be released at the Malacca police contingent headquarters today.

Meanwhile, state police chief Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the traffic operation was mounted together with the Road Transport Department and the Department of Environment.

He said all 26 drivers who were driving Proton Satria and Honda Civic cars were held in three separate operations conducted between 10.30pm and 4am at Bulatan Gangsa Gajah, Sungai Putat and a parking lot at Klebang.

“Checks found that various modifications had been made to the car engine and exhaust system, apart from other traffic-related offences.

“The drivers aged between 20 and 38 years were from Penang, Pahang, Johor, Selangor, Terengganu, Perak, Kedah and Malacca. It is learned they were on a sightseeing trip,” he said, adding that summonses totalling RM7,800 have been issued. – Bernama, January 10, 2022.
