TWO earthquakes hit North Halmahera in North Maluku, Indonesia, in the span of an hour this morning.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the first quake, at a magnitude of 5.2, hit Halmahera at 4.27am Western Indonesian time at a depth of 10km, followed by the second quake, at a magnitude of 5.5, 32 minutes later.

Tobelo and other areas, including Sofifi and Galela, felt the tremors.

The agency said there is no risk of a tsunami, and no immediate report of any loss of life or property.

Halmahera, the largest of the Maluku Islands, is almost 405km from Manado, North Sulawesi. – Bernama, January 10, 2022.
