A PALESTINIAN man imprisoned in an Israeli jail ended his 141-day hunger strike yesterday after authorities decided to release him, said prisoners’ affairs senior official Qadri Abu Bakker.

Hisham Abu Hawash, 40, a father of five from a village near Hebron in the West Bank, went on a hunger strike to protest his detention since August, reported Xinhua.

He is a Palestinian Islamic Jihad member and held under administrative detention – a controversial practice of arresting suspects for months without allowing them to view the evidence or charges against them.

His lawyer, Khaled Mahajneh, told reporters that Israel has agreed to not extend the detention beyond February 26.

Abu Hawash was hospitalised last month. He became frail and unconscious in recent days in an Israeli hospital, which denied reports that the man’s life is in danger on Sunday.

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics said Israel is holding more than 4,000 Palestinians, including 34 women, in 23 prisons and detention camps. – Bernama, January 5, 2022.
