INDIA’S Covid-19 tally rose to 35.02 million today, with 58,097 new cases registered in the past 24 hours nationwide, the federal Health Ministry’s latest data showed.

A total of 534 deaths due to the pandemic since yesterday morning raised the toll of fatalities to 482,551, according to Xinhua.

This is a steep rise in the numbers of both new cases and deaths in a day, with 37,379 new cases and 124 deaths registered yesterday.

There are still 214,004 active Covid-19 cases in the country, with 42,174 active cases recorded in the past 24 hours. This is the eighth consecutive day the active load showed an uptick.

A total of 34.3 million people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals so far, with 15,389 in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the country’s Omicron tally has reached 2,135, with Maharashtra and Delhi reporting 653 and 464 cases, respectively.

To date 828 patients have been discharged after recovery, as per the federal Health Ministry’s data. – Bernama, January 5, 2022.
