MALAYSIANS on social media have demanded politicians stop pretending to help flood victims, accusing them of using the disaster to boost their online following.

Some simply said lawmakers were ‘wayang (showboating)’.

Women, Family and Community Minister Rina Harun was a particular target of criticism when a clip of her washing at the premises of a relief centre went viral.

As of now, “Rina” is in the top 10 trending topics on Twitter currently.

Ca$h#R (@KeshSinghR1) wanted to know why she was washing imaginary mud on the floors, sarcastically congratulating her for winning ‘wayang’ of the week award.

Another user Ahmad Yahya (@yahyaa_89) wrote: “Only in Malaysia can someone as incompetent and brainless as Rina Harun be a minister.”

However, Rina hit back by saying that she was at SK Salak in Salak Tinggi to help with clean up.

The school was used as a flood-relief centre, and Rina said she and her team were clearing up ahead of school term, which begins in the second week of January.

“All families have returned to their homes after the flood receded. I am proud of the volunteers and all agencies under the Women, Family and Community Ministry for their spirit and work to ensure the school can resume normally when the school session resumes,” she said.

Another user Eldzaryah (@eldzaryah) posted a video of a group of Umno women pretending to clean up a house that was damaged during the flood.

She added the houses got even messier after the Umno women showed up

In reply, user (@farahkhairuddin) posted a screenshot of a conversation where it said the women were only there to take pictures and not do any clean up.

Meanwhile another video that has gone viral on Twitter today with more than 1 million views has been angrily criticised by users.

User Syazwan Shah (@syzwnrose) posted a video of a VIP with multiple escorts making its way to Dusun Nanding.

In the 28-second a video, an ambulance is stopped to allow the VIP to move. User 2BON2B (@OK__K__KO) wrote: “Only in Malaysia are government politicians the first priority. They come first before the lives of others. And we didn’t even vote for them.”

Earlier today, a DAP assemblyman said he was prevented from attending a community clean-up event in his constituency, which was attended by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Dusun Tua representative Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof said police stopped him from entering.

“The PM was coming. As the assemblyman for the constituency, I was asked if I could greet him as a sign of respect.

“But this morning when I wanted to enter the location, the police did not allow me in. Never mind, I also have a lot of other work. Welcome YB,” he said in a tweet.

Unusually heavy and continuous rain from December 17 caused flooding across large parts of the Klang Valley, Perak, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Malacca and Negri Sembilan.

As of today, there have been 47 deaths and five people are still missing.

There were 29,108 people displaced by floods in Pahang, and a further 23,302 people in Selangor. – December 26, 2021.
