THE third term for the current school session, slated to begin on January 2 and 3, has been postponed due to the devastating floods nationwide, said Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin.
Schools in Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor) will reopen on January 9, while those in Group B (Perlis, Perak, Penang, Pahang, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak) will reopen on January 10.
Radzi said his ministry “decided to postpone the reopening (of schools) for a week after considering the flood situations in several states”.
The inundations have directly or indirectly impacted parents, students and instructors, he added.
“We are also looking at schools that are being utilised as temporary relief centres or have been substantially damaged by the floods.”
He said his ministry understands that people are in a difficult situation and need time before returning to school.
“We pray for the best to those affected by the floods. The ministry is committed to look after the welfare of its teachers and students.”
