SELANGOR Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the state anticipates more people to become flood victims in the next few days even as the weather improves.

He said, to date, 30,632 people had been displaced by the heavy rainfall last weekend.

Amirudin said there were reasons why the flood situation in some parts of the state would not improve anytime soon.

Water from upstream areas was now flowing to low areas, leading rivers to overflow, he said, adding that this was the case now in Kuala Selangor and Kuala Langat.

Amirudin said the figures would also rise as some residents did not want to leave their properties and insisted on staying.

“For instance, in Kampung Baru Hicom, people there have decided to stay in their homes and do not wish to be evacuated

“So, what we have done for them is give the necessary food aid as well medical aid,” he said.

According to him, there are 2,818 individuals from several agencies that have been on duty since day one of the flood.

“We have three main priorities now, which is saving lives, providing aid and cleaning their place,” he said.

Chief of Defence Force Gen Affendi Buang earlier said, as of today, the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) had mobilised assets and 919 troops of various ranks through Op Murni to help in flood relief efforts.

He said Op Murni would focus on several affected areas in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Terengganu and Kelantan.

As of last night, over 61,000 victims had been moved to relief centres, with Pahang and Selangor recording the highest number of evacuees. – December 21, 2021.
