17 dead in flooded areas, says Selangor MB

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari says 10 bodies have been found in flooded areas in Klang, three in Hulu Langat and four in Sepang. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Afif Abd Halim, December 21, 2021.

A TOTAL of 17 bodies were found in flooded areas around Selangor, Amirudin Shari said.

The Selangor menteri besar said 10 were from Klang, three in Hulu Langat and four in Sepang.

Amirudin said authorities were still identifying the reasons for the deaths and the outcome will be finalised soon.

“The deceased are not only victims, there is a volunter as well,” he said during an hour-long press conference today.

Since one of the deceased is a volunteer, he advised the volunteers to be careful before going into risky areas.

He added that an assistance of RM10,000 will be given to families of victims who lost their lives in the tragedy. 

“At the same time, RM1,000 assistance will be given to each family affected by the floods.

“This RM1,000 assistance is not only for those who have moved to a temporary relief centre, but also for those who live in their own homes, stay at relatives’ houses or are at shelters but are not registered,” he said.

Amirudin also announced the launch of Tabung Ikhtiar Selangor Bangkit to facilitate individuals, private companies, corporations or government-linked companies, as well as any individuals who wish to assist in the flood recovery process in the state.

“As an initial commitment to this fund, I will contribute a month’s salary into this fund,” he said. – December 21, 2021.
