MUDA has raised more than RM1 million in less than 100 hours to help flood victims.

The party ended the fundraising drive, which was launched soon after news of the devastating floods, after collecting RM1,045,600.

Muda has advised donors to divert their donations to two other civil society groups – Pertubuhan Demokrat Sosial and Mercy Malaysia Flood Relief.

Muda vice-president Thanussha Francis Xavier told The Malaysian Insight that the donations will go towards helping flood victims with food, post-flood clean-up and other needs.

“I’m extremely grateful to ordinary Malaysians who contributed out of the generosity of their hearts,” she said.

“I’m humbled that so many Malaysians came out in solidarity to help one another through donations and physically helping on the ground.”

She said the people’s empathy with the victims was the driving force behind the nation’s efforts to save as many people as possible, as national search-and-rescue operations were only mobilised late last night, which is three days after the floods struck.

Muda announced its donation drive on December 17. The initial target was to collect RM10,000.

However, the response was positive, and it managed to raise RM160,000.

It then raised its target to RM300,000. As it stands, the collection has exceeded the target.

Muda previously said its initial target was to help victims in Selangor, but given the positive response, it will allocate funds to all the states affected by the floods.

Muda founder and president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said in a statement that every sen collected will be used solely for the flood victims.

“The donations will be audited to ensure transparency and integrity in managing the funds,” he said.
