FLOOD victims and members of the public are crying out on social media over the past 24 hours for help and rescue, with some still trapped in homes submerged in flood waters.

The #DaruratBanjir and #bantubanjir hashtags were trending on Twitter.

“There’s a baby in the house, the house is sinking,” was a SOS call sent out by a social media user as he cried for immediate help.

Sharing photos of houses submerged in water in Karak, Pahang, @kamarul14 called for immediate help as the water level had reached the roof.

“Army please come to this house,” he tweeted while sharing the address in Idaman Lakeview Jaya in Karak.

Sri Muda in Shah Alam, Selangor was one of the worst-hit neighbourhoods.

Eight hours on @aishuganesan298 said she was still waiting for help as the ground floor of her house was fully submerged.

“Update – 10.45am.  We see boats coming in but no rescues yet. They have informed us that more boats are coming in. We are waiting,” she tweeted.

At 12.30pm, she said she was still waiting for help.

“Update 12.30pm. We are still waiting for rescue. At least food or water at this point.

“I have friends with kayak/fishing boats outside Sri Muda to help us evacuate,” she said, adding that only the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Force personnel were allowed in.

Some said help has yet to arrive after several hours and victims include senior citizens, pregnant women and children. The floods have also caused food and electricity supplies to be cut off.

Boats are needed to access the neighbourhood as water levels have reached the second floor of double-storey houses.

“VERY URGENT!!! Taman Sri Muda Section 25/103 needs help. Waters are rising rapidly & the 1st floor is totally inaccessible. Many residents including my cousins are stuck at the 2nd floor w/o any food/electricity since yday. Pls update If any rescue service is contactable,” @p0tat0baby0303 tweeted.

@subawarran tweeted that water has reached neck levels at Sri Muda.

“Sri Muda Shah Alam water at neck level, please send boats, there are families with children, pregnant ladies, senior citizens. Please share with the relevant authorities. Phone line/internet connection is extremely bad. No help from yesterday, no food, no electricity, water at neck level,” he said.

Muda’s vice president Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier meanwhile requested for speedboats that could be used to evacuate victims.

“Dear all, we’re looking for speedboats so that we can reach the Sri Muda area that has been very badly hit. Many are in need of rescue and are stranded on rooftops while water levels are rising.

“If you can assist with contacts who can facilitate speedboats, please inform here,” she tweeted.

Taman Sri Muda trended the most on Twitter at press time.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said last night that more than 11,000 people have been displaced in what is ranked among the worst floods in history. – December 19, 2021.
