UMNO should not be arrogant by behaving like a “big brother” and thinking that it can demand for an early election without the support of other allies, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

He reminded Umno leaders that the election date could only be set jointly by the political parties that support Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Pagoh MP added that Umno only returned to lead the government with the support of the parties, including Perikatan Nasional (PN), and not on its own strength.

“We heard about the call for an early general election. But, in fact, it is not Umno that decides.

“PN friends will sit down to discuss when the time is right, that is a term that I want to state.

“So, I would like to advise certain parties in Umno, be a little respectful, equal, fair, there is no big brother, don’t easily forget yourself… (I) speak slowly, afraid of any misunderstanding.”

He said this while delivering a policy speech at the fourth Bersatu General Assembly at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), Kuala Lumpur today.

The former prime minister also said that Bersatu’s support for Ismail Sabri to be appointed prime minister was also based on several terms of the agreement.

“We will give support for as long as these terms are adhered to, until it is the right time to hold elections,” Muhyiddin said to nearly 1,000 Bersatu delegates. – December 19, 2021.
