BERSATU members should not cheer when Malay leaders from opposition parties are convicted in court, its deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said.

He said party members should instead take heed and learn when former national leaders are charged and sentenced in court.

“By right we should feel sad and disappointed. We should be remorseful, no matter who the person is.”

He added that such cases should prevent Bersatu members from deluding themselves with the power they currently have.

“God is the owner of everything, the determinant of a nation’s authority,” he said.

He added that Bersatu is indeed against treachery and abuse but said it is not appropriate to rejoice because the individuals involved also needed to protect their dignity.

“Yet, it is not the way we cheer over one’s misery. It is not our practice to rejoice over the tragedy that befalls our rivals.

“They also have children and families, they also have dignity that needs to be protected,” the Tambun MP said when officiating at Armada’s and Srikandi’s annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Although not named, the youth and sports minister is believed to be referring to former prime minister Najib Razak, who lost the appeal on his conviction for abuse of power and corruption involving RM42 million in SRC International funds.

The Court of Appeal last week upheld the Pekan MP’s sentence of 12 years’ jail and a fine of RM210 million. – December 18, 2021.
