THE Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered the Home Ministry to register the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) within two weeks. 

Muda announced its court victory on Twitter after a hearing this morning.

“The judge has ruled in our favour. The court has instructed the home minister to register Muda within 14 days and pay the legal cost of RM10,000,” it said. 

Muda pro-tem president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and 12 others had challenged the decision by Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin and the Registrar of Societies in rejecting their appeal to register Muda as a political party.

Today, the court said it found the reason given by the home minister to reject Muda’s registration as being prejudicial to national security, had no basis, said lawyer Lim Wei Jiet, who is also one of Muda’s co-founders.

“We hope the government does not appeal this decision and allows Muda to be registered, so that democracy and the fight of young people can continue in Malaysia,” he said in a press conference outside the court. 

Syed Saddiq added that the court’s ruling had made the obstacles and challenges Muda faced meaningful and worth it.

“We went through all kinds of hardships and challenges, prosecution, intimidation, bribery; it is unbelievable.

“Muda is here not to destroy Malaysia, but to build this multiracial, multicultural and multireligious country,” said the Muar MP and former youth and sports minister.

Syed Saddiq formed Muda after Pakatan Harapan (PH) was ousted from federal power in February last year and replaced by Perikatan Nasional. Muda is with the opposition, but not part of PH. – December 14, 2021.
