CONVICTED former prime minister Najib Razak, who failed to quash his conviction at the Court of Appeal will file an appeal at the Federal Court today, his lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said.

Shafee told the appellate court that an affidavit and a notice of appeal against the court ruling will be filed within the next 30 minutes.

A motion for a stay of execution is also being filed, he said.

Lawyer Farhan Read asked the Court of Appeal to allow Najib a stay of execution with the same terms given by the High Court.

Najib is currently on bail of RM2 million in two sureties and has to report to the nearest police station twice in a month.

The Court of Appeal consented to it.

If the appeals court had not agreed, Najib would have been unable to continue as the Pekan MP, a position he had held since 1976.

The Umno politician would also be disqualified from contesting in any upcoming elections.

The court adjourned at 11.15am and all parties exited the hybrid proceedings live-streamed to reporters at the media hall in the Court of Appeal.

Najib is guilty of seven criminal charges in relation to the theft of RM42 million of funds belonging to SRC International, a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

Later, lead prosecutor V. Sithambaram told reporters the public can expect to know the Federal Court decision on Najib’s conviction in six to nine months. – December 8, 2021.
