RELIGIOUS violence may erupt in the country if police continue hunting the ex-husband and youngest daughter of M. Indira Gandhi, warned the Malaysian Association of Muslim Scholars (PUM).
The group posted a statement on Facebook, urging police to stop looking for Muhammad Riduan Abdullah and Prasana Diksa, after the Federal Court on Monday ruled that the unilateral conversion of Indira Gandhi’s three children to Islam was null and void.
“We ask for the kind consideration of police not to hunt the father and the children until a solution can be found,” said PUM president Abdul Halim Abd Kadir.
“We are concerned that if it is carried out, there is a possibility of conflict between religious adherents in this country that may spark violence in society.”
PUM asked that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong allow it to provide advice regarding matters related to conversion to Islam, and demanded that Putrajaya act quickly on the issue, which it said could embolden some quarters in Malaysia.
It added that the children converted to Islam by Riduan must not be allowed to revert back to Hinduism.
After the apex court’s judgment, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun had vowed that police would track down Riduan and Prasana, 9, whom he had abducted nine years ago.
Indira Gandhi’s other two children, Tevi Darsiny, 20, and Karan Dinish, 19, had reportedly told a daily that they could now proudly declare themselves as Hindus following the court decision.
On April 2, 2009, Riduan, then known as K. Pathmanathan, had converted the three children without Indira Gandhi’s consent.
In 2016, Indira Gandhi, a kindergarten teacher, reportedly said her two elder children had been practising Hindus since birth, and that their MyKad bore the names they were given at birth and stated their religion as “Hindu”. – January 31, 2018.
