PAS to use Sarawak polls to gauge GE15 readiness

PAS is contesting in the upcoming Sarawak polls as a means to gauge its readiness for the 15th general election, and not to oppose Gabungan Parti Sarawak, party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, November 30, 2021.

PAS’ decision to contest in the 12th Sarawak elections will be used to gauge the party machinery’s preparations to face the 15th general election (GE15), its deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS’ decision to contest in the state polls was not to oppose the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) but more to measure PAS’ work.

“The measure of politics is the elections. If there are no elections, (how) will we measure our work, community acceptance and readiness to face new norms?” he told reporters after opening the Sungai Langat Trail under the National River Trails project in Bangi today.

He said that PAS would not contest in 11 seats as in the previous Sarawak polls.

“The number of seats is still under review but it will not be 11 seats,” he said.

The Election Commission has set December 18 for polling and December 6 for nomination. Early voting is fixed on December 14.

Bersatu and Barisan Nasional will reportedly not field candidates in the upcoming polls.

On Sunday, GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg was reported to have said their decision demonstrated a positive spirit as fellow partners in the federal government, and that they understood the state’s political situation. – Bernama, November 30, 2021.
