SELANGOR reported an increase in the number of domestic violence cases, with 1,519 cases between January and October this year, compared with 1,349 cases last year.

Only 951 such cases were recorded in 2018 and 1,159 in 2019, said state Public Health, Unity, Women and Family Development Committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.

“Due to the increase in cases, the state government has established the SELamat hotline, so the public can report domestic violence cases, particularly in Selangor.

“The hotline has been in operation since November 1 and received 14 calls as of November 24, of which seven involve economic, physical and psychological abuse.

“All calls received were non-emergency ones, as the reason they were made was to obtain counselling to help the callers manage their emotions.”

The state executive councillor said callers will be given the choice to obtain face-to-face or online counselling or further intervention from non-governmental organisations and qualified counsellors under the Selangor State Secretary’s Office’s Counselling Centre.

The 24-hour SELamat hotline can be reached at 03-6419-5027. – Bernama, November 29, 2021.
