THE appellate court today rejected former prime minister Najib Razak’s application to delay a December 8 decision on his appeal against his conviction and sentence for misappropriation of millions of ringgit.

Deputy registrar Mohd Kahiri Haron informed Najib’s lawyer in a letter that the application was rejected.

“Please attend court on that date,” the letter said.

Yesterday the Pekan MP requested that the decision be postponed as he would be in quarantine at that time.

Najib is due to return on December 5 from a trip to Singapore to visit his daughter, who has just given birth.

His lawyers had asked that the Court of Appeal defer its decision to December 13 to 17.

They said upon Najib’s return, he would be in quarantine for seven days until December 12.

It was stated in the application that the prosecution team had been informed of the matter and that it did not have any objections to the rescheduling.

It also said that the trial of Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, for money laundering was also set to resume at the High Court on December 8.

Najib is appealing to quash his conviction on seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust (CBT) over SRC International funds.

In July, Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced Najib to 12 years in jail and a fine of RM210,000.

He was found guilty today of all seven criminal charges in connection with having received RM42 million from SRC International, making him the first former prime minister to be charged and convicted in Malaysia.

He was also convicted on three counts of criminal breach of trust, three counts of money-laundering and one count of power abuse. – November 24, 2021.
