PERIKATAN Nasional’s (PN) performance in the Malacca elections today – where it won two seats out of 28 contested – showed that the pact was beginning to make inroads in the state, Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

The PN chairman and Bersatu president said the coalition had proven to be a challenge to the other parties.

Speaking to the media after the Election Commission’s official announcement that Barisan Nasional (BN) had won the elections in Malacca, the former prime minister said the votes PN managed to garner were encouraging.

He said PN has proven itself to be a powerful vote disruptor and hoped to perform better in the next general election.

“I can state that the majority of our losses were mostly under a thousand; there were also only 100 to 300-vote losses in some areas. This shows that PN has made inroads in Malacca.

“There is already a wind of change but it was not so strong tonight for us to be able to form a government,” he said.

PN’s Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof, 35, won BN’s former stronghold Sg Udang seat, while Mohd Yadzil Yaakub won the Bemban constituency. Both are from Bersatu.

PN contested in all 28 seats, facing challenge from BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in all seats.

It was a tough election for PN as the pact had to face its federal ally, Umno and BN, in the state elections.

Umno led BN to a huge victory in Malacca, with the coalition winning 20 of the 27 state seats announced as at press time.

Umno won 17 of the seats, followed by MCA (2) and MIC (1).

Umno is also leading in the final seat, Pengkalan Batu, where it is involved in a tight race with DAP.

For PH, the Anwar Ibrahim-led pact won five seats – four by DAP and one by Amanah – while PKR failed to win any seats. – November 20, 2021.
