MALACCA DAP election director Khoo Poay Tiong today urged the police to be fair in their conduct when enforcing the public health order during election time in the state.
The Kota Melaka MP said the cops were only interested in finding fault with Pakatan Harapan and not with Barisan Nasional or Perikatan Nasional.
His comments came after a PH candidate was fined for wearing a jacket bearing the PH logo while campaigning.
“One of our candidates was fined for wearing a jacket bearing PH logo. We would like to ask the cops, especially the Malacca police chief, if they are also probing BN or PN for breaching the SOPs.
“I have with videos and pictures of BN and PN violating the SOPs but we have not heard of any police action against them,” said Khoo in a press conference, where he showed videos and pictures of alleged SOP violations by BN and PN in several areas in Malacca.
He questioned if BN or PN were issued fines for their alleged transgressions.
“To the cops, (I say) don’t practise double standards. Be fair to all parties participating in the elections. If you have to probe PH, do the same to BN and PN.
“There are videos available on social media which you can easily find. They are all viral,” he said.
Putrajaya has banned political rallies, walkabouts and home visits during the campaigning period of Malacca’s 15th state elections to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Political parties and candidates have been advised to go online to reach voters.
Candidates are only allowed to campaign in vehicles outfitted with loudspeakers to deliver their speeches, subject to police approval.
Meanwhile, DAP veteran and Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang urged the people to go out to vote on November 20.
The veteran lawmaker said a low voter turnout would hinder reform plans.
“Jordan and Algeria, which held elections in the time of Covid-19, have seen very low voter turnout.
“We need everyone to come out to vote because that will ensure a better and just Malaysia, not for Malacca alone but for the country. We must come out as a world class nation and therefore I urge everyone to convince their family members, friends and relatives to come out on November 20,” Lim said.
The state will go to the polls on November 20. – November 14, 2021.
