SYED Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman did not expect Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders to choose party-hoppers over candidates from Muda, who is part of the opposition.

Speaking to reporters this evening, the Muar MP said that he was hoping to unite the opposition under a solid united front in the Malacca polls before facing the general election.

“Honestly I did not expect them to choose the frogs over us,” he said.

“I wanted to form a solid united opposition front that upholds values and principle over anything else.”

The “frogs” Syed Saddiq was referring to were those who had caused the collapse of the Malacca state government last month.

They were former chief minister Idris Haron (Sg Udang-BN), Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor-BN), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas-Bersatu) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu-Ind).

Only Norhizam was not accepted to contest under the PH banner after defecting from DAP to become a pro-Perikatan Nasional assemblyman following the Sheraton Move.

Idris Haron has become a PKR member and will contest in the Asahan state assembly seat.

The Malacca assembly was dissolved last month after the four assemblymen withdrew their support for Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

Following this, a decision was made to dissolve the assembly and hold an election.

The Election Commission has set November 8 for nomination day, while polls will be held on November 20.

Syed Saddiq said all four assemblymen did not cross over to back PH but did so solely for power.

“They decided to back PH after they realised they were not promised to be given power.”

Earlier, Syed Saddiq said Muda will stay out of the state polls and focus on the general election.

However, a week ago, the youth-based party founder was optimistic that Muda would be able to negotiate with PH over seats allocation in Malacca. – November 6, 2021.
