Provide promised services or face fines, telcos warned

TELECOMMUNICATION companies will be fined if they fail to provide the promised services to consumers, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa.

He said Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) laws require each service provider to implement the minimum standards set.

If they do not meet the minimum standards, the commission has the authority to issue a warning to them, including imposing a fine, he added.

“MCMC often goes down to the ground to look into the people’s problems and grievances, either via complaints or information directly or indirectly received, including viral ones.”

Annuar said his ministry has created the National Digital Network (Jendela) Map portal as a platform for the people to lodge complaints regarding coverage, broadband speed and so on.

“To obtain quick information on which areas are affected, we have created the Jendela Map portal, where MCMC can conduct daily monitoring so as to carry out follow-up action, including repair works.

“We have also supplied equipment to all commissions nationwide to carry out a review and random measurement of broadband speed of telcos as promised.

“At least, this will make sure they are constantly on their toes and ready to improve their quality of service.”

He said his ministry takes a serious view of the matter, as coverage involving service providers, including broadband, is a necessity for all levels of society.

The matter will be tabled in Parliament to improve and tighten existing laws so they can be implemented more effectively, he added.

“We do not want this matter to escape our attention. So far, some telcos have been fined. To improve services, including the quality of broadband, we need to create a conducive ecosystem and get the cooperation of all parties.” – Bernama, October 31, 2021.
