Selangor saw the most student arrests in 2020-21, says ministry

SELANGOR saw the highest number of university student arrests among the states between 2020 and 2021, the Higher Education Ministry said today.

Seventy-seven students were arrested during the period, it said.

“In Selangor in 2020, 17 were arrested for violent crimes while 25 were arrested for theft. 

“In 2021, 23 were arrested for violent crimes and 12 were arrested for theft,” it said in a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat.

Nationwide, police recorded 55 cases of violent crime involving university students on campuses between 2020 and 2021.

Police logged 154 cases of theft in 2020 and 87 in 2021.

“The state with the lowest number of cases involving university students in 2020 was Perlis with just two cases while Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Sabah had no arrests in 2021,” said MOHE.
