PAKATAN Harapan (PH) will try to put the brakes on the Malacca elections by taking the matter to court.

Its state chief Adly Zahari said the coalition will file a suit to seek a review of the election process, including the way in which the state assembly was dissolved.

“Malacca Pakatan Harapan will use legal means in order for the government with enough legitimacy in terms of majority (support) to be formed.

“However, we will be ready to face any circumstance, including the state election,” he said.

He said the reason for its delay in filing the suit was that the notice of dissolution of the state legislative assembly was given to assemblymen only today.

The Election Commission (EC) said today the state polls will commence on November 20, with nomination set for November 8.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said early voting is on November 16.

“We expect an estimated 70% of voters in Malacca to come out to vote on that day,” said Ghani during a press conference.

The state assembly was dissolved on October 4 after four assemblymen withdrew support for Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

They were Sg Udang assemblyman and former chief minister Idris Haron, Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor).

This left Sulaiman with 13 votes – 12 from Umno and one from Bersatu – while the opposition had 15, including four from the defectors.

The Malacca legislative assembly has 28 seats. – October 18, 2021.
