PETRONAS is taking legal action to cancel “wrongful” arrest warrants issued against its former officers, following trade union claims against its joint venture company in Sudan.

“PetroDar Operating Company Ltd (PDOC), a joint venture company in Sudan in which Petronas has an interest, is pursuing legal recourse to cancel wrongful warrants of arrest against its former officers relating to trade union claims made against it,” said the national oil and gas company in a statement.

“PDOC’s external counsel is in the process of cancelling the warrants of arrest.”

Petronas said the arrests are not related to its other legal proceeding to reclaim rights over land and the Petronas Complex in capital Khartoum.

It has also filed a request for arbitration with the International Centre for Settlement of Dispute.

“As the legal processes have commenced, Petronas is unable to provide further information on both matters.”

Sudan’s transitional government has also reportedly issued an arrest warrant against Petronas’ country manager over corruption allegations.

The report, quoting sources, said the transitional government is working to confiscate Petronas assets on the alleged grounds that they were acquired via illegal means during the rule of former leader Omar al-Bashir.

It also noted that the move may lead to bilateral tension between Malaysia and Sudan. – October 13, 2021.
