THE Transport Ministry will assist food delivery service (p-hailing) riders to obtain a valid driving licence to facilitate their involvement in the sector.

Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said this will lighten the burden of those who have lost their jobs or stopped schooling to earn a living, adding that the matter has been discussed with the Finance Ministry.

“We understand the situation where the desperation to earn money has forced them to use illegal ways to earn an income, and we, at the ministry, want to help them by giving them an opportunity.”

He said this will also help p-hailing riders who may face difficulty in paying for a driving licence, adding that the people should wait for Budget 2022, which will be tabled soon.

Wee was commenting on a report about p-hailing riders who do not have a valid driving licence or have been using the identification documents of other people, discovered during a recent Road Transport Department operation.

He said p-hailing riders, especially those in the B40 group, facing enforcement cases, including unpaid summonses, can request for discounts from the ministry.

The Ayer Hitam MP had earlier handed out food baskets to 65 p-hailing riders who are active in Yong Peng and Ayer Hitam, Johor. – Bernama, October 9, 2021.
