A PROPERTY developer in Penang, who was a witness in former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng’s undersea tunnel corruption trial, was found dead today, The Star reported.

The 53-year-old businessman is said to have fallen to his death from a condominium in Pulau Tikus, George Town.

George Town police chief Soffian Santong confirmed the incident and said that a statement will be issued soon.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) also confirmed that the businessman was a witness in the trial.

The Star said the MACC was informed of the witness’s death earlier this morning, quoting sources.

“We are shocked to have learnt about the death of our witness,” the MACC said.

Lim, who was also the finance minister under the Pakatan Harapan administration, is facing four charges relating to the undersea tunnel project.

He is accused of soliciting a 10% cut in profits from the project from Consortium Zenith BUCG’s managing director Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli, of seeking RM3.3 million in kickbacks to appoint Zarul’s company to undertake the project, and another two charges of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land to two companies.

The trial started on July 13 and is still ongoing. – October 5, 2021.
