ISMAIL Sabri Yaakob hopes all opposition MPs will sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on transformation and political stability with the government.

“Some of them have not signed yet but discussions are still ongoing. And there are some who have already agreed,” the prime minister said in an interview on national television tonight.

“My target is for all the opposition parties to sign the MOU. Inclusivity should not be for race alone but also politics,” said the Umno vice president.

Ismail was responding to questions on the MOU, which was signed with Pakatan Harapan last month. This is the first time the ruling government has signed a pact with the opposition to maintain political stability in exchange for certain reforms.

The MOU, however, does not include new parties Pejuang, Warisan and Parti Sarawak Bersatu, which have four, eight and two MPs respectively.

The Ismail-led administration is currently supported by 114 lawmakers in the 220-seat Dewan Rakyat.

Commenting on the matter, Ismail said the political temperature has come down since the MOU was signed.

“Take Parliament for instance. There is no more shouting and hurling of insults and the debates have been more professional.

“I’m satisfied how this is turning out without any more shouting as we respect one another,” said the Bera MP.

“I have told the opposition that the government needs them to be a check and balance to what the movement is doing. But more than the peace in Parliament, there is less chaos outside too.”

He said this was why the government decided to to sign an MOU with the opposition.

“This is to enable the government to focus its energy on governance instead of politicking.” – October 3, 2021.
