A SUHAKAM inquiry panel investigating the disappearance of Amri Che Mat has asked a witness to locate the two individuals who had seen the activist being abducted in 2016.
Perlis PKR chairman Faisol Abdul Rahman, who was called as the third witness in a hearing today, had said he knew the two people who had witnessed Amri’s abduction.
Suhakam commissioner Mah Weng Kwai had immediately asked if the two witnesses could be traced so that they could testify at the inquiry.
The Suhakam officers said they had tried to contact one of the witnesses but failed to get a response.
Mah then asked if Faisol if he could contact the witnesses and ask them to attend the inquiry.
Faisol said they were afraid to come forward as they feared for their safety and their family’s.
“We want to tell them that it’s safe to come and give their testimony,” said Mah.
Earlier, Faisol told the inquiry that his team had initiated an investigation on the ground two days after Amri’s disappearance in November 26.
Faisal said the team had located two people who had witnessed the abduction.
“They met a witness called Syed Amri. He told the team he saw how Amri was taken.”
Faisol said the team had brought Syed Amri to the police station to have his statement recorded.
Mah asked Faisol to also contact the other witness who had claimed to have seen the abduction.
Faisal said he would try to contact both witnesses.
Mah also told the police observers to track down the two witnesses.
Amri was abducted 550m from his home in Padang Behor, Kangar. Police later found his car in Bukit Chabang.
The 43-year-old had told his eldest of four daughters that he was going out the night he vanished.
In her police report, his wife Norhayati Ariffin said there were unknown cars and motorcycles parked near their home the day the activist went missing.
Amri was on the 1997 Malaysian Mount Everest expedition team.

The panel aims to determine whether Pastor Raymond Koh and Amri’s abduction, as well as the disappearance of Joshua and Ruth Hilmyare cases of enforced disappearance sanctioned by the state. – January 24, 2018.
