THE arrest of three senior Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers over allegations of abuse of power and misappropriation of funds must be debated in Parliament, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson-PH) said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

As the case involved multiple authorities and a large sum of money, he said it should be debated so that the government can shed light on its next course of action.

“This case is serious. Not only does it involve the MACC’s negligence, it also involves the police, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Finance Ministry as the value of the counterfeit is large.

“I ask that the speaker allow this matter to be debated so that we can get a picture of the steps that will be taken by the government,” he said.

Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH) filed a motion on the incident yesterday. He requested the matter be debated today, to which Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said he will respond to him in writing about his decision at 2.30pm.

“Since it is a matter of public interest, it must be hastened and I request that this motion be allowed.”

Is in unclear if the speaker has made a decision to reply to Fahmi.

On Monday, the MACC said that the three were arrested as part of an ongoing investigation.

However, a blogpost revealed that the anti-graft body had detained three officers in connection with the counterfeiting of cash seized from former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation director-general Hasanah Abd Hamid three years ago.

CID director Abd Jalil Hassan in a statement said that he has yet to receive any police report regarding the alleged abuse of power and misappropriation of funds.

In April, Hasanah was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) by the high court in a criminal breach of trust case involving RM50.4 million in government funds after the prosecution withdrew its case against her, telling the court that a new development had been uncovered.
