PADANG Rengas MP Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has suggested that the 15th general election be held at the end of Parliament’s current term, which will end by the middle of July 2023.

GE15 should not be held any sooner than that, so that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government can carry out its agenda for the people in an orderly manner, the Umno politician said.

“As part of parliamentary reforms, I hope we can stick to the five years that is agreed upon for each term; five years means five years,” Nazri said in the Dewan Rakyat today when debating the Royal Address.

Nazri said it would not be fair to the people who voted their representatives in for five years. Political parties also made promises and plans to be achieved in the five-year period, he added.

“We would be deceiving the people if we say they vote for us for five years, then after two years we have a general election,” Nazri said.

The Election Commission also needs time to plan for a general election, while the funding it is allocated for a general election is also meant to be for once in every five years, he added.

The last general election was held in 2018.

Nazri said he hoped that completing a full term would be agreed to by the government and also Pakatan Harapan (PH).

In the memorandum of understanding on transformation and political stability signed between Ismail Sabri and PH, one of the points agreed is that Parliament will not be dissolved before July 31, 2022.

This is part of the “political ceasefire” to allow the government, with bipartisan support, to deal effectively with the Covid-19 pandemic and restore the economy. – September 20, 2021.
