FOUR travellers headed to Langkawi tested positive for Covid-19 in a pre-entry screening, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
He said the four cases were traced to three different entry points headed into the island.
“A total of 3,454 tourists were successfully screened. Four Covid-19 cases were detected as a result of screening at the air and sea entrances into Langkawi.
“One case was detected at the Penang International Airport, one at Subang Airport and two at the Kuala Perlis ferry terminal,” he said on Twitter today.
There was no further elaboration, including which category of Covid-19 they fall into.
Tourist screening comes as part of the travel bubble pilot project to Langkawi, which kickstarted yesterday.
Yesterday, the Health Ministry detected five positive Covid-19 cases among domestic tourists en route to Langkawi.
Noor Hisham said all five cases were under category 1, which means they are asymptomatic.
They were given home surveillance and observation orders to be isolated for a period of 10 days.
Noor Hisham said that the success of the Langkawi pilot project was crucial in determining the direction of the opening of the next domestic tourism bubble destination.
The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry said it was targeting about 200,000 domestic tourist arrivals to Langkawi between this month and December.
Its minister Nancy Shukri said about 30,000 tourists are expected to visit the resort island this month following its reopening under a tourism bubble pilot project, which began yesterday. – September 17, 2021.
