422 Covid-19 deaths as toll passes 22,000

THE Ministry Health reported 422 Covid-19 deaths as of midnight last night, taking the nationwide toll to 22,009. 

According to data provided by the ministry, only five of the victims succumbed to the disease yesterday. The remaining 415 deaths were backlog cases that were previously unreported.

Data on the coronavirus deaths is now available daily on the ministry’s CovidNow website. 

There are three indicators for Covid-19 deaths: Total daily reported deaths including backlog cases, deaths that actually took place on the day and deaths on a seven-day average.

Selangor accounted for 116 of the total deaths, followed by Kedah (79) and Sabah (71).

Other states reporting deaths were Penang (37), Johor (46), Perak (21), Kelantan (16), Kuala Lumpur (11), Pahang (10), Sarawak (5), Terengganu (4), Perlis (4) and Malacca (2).  

No deaths were reported in Negri Sembilan, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Meanwhile, the data also showed that 92 of the 422 fatalities were pronounced dead on arrival.

Based on the seven-day average provided by CovidNow, the national count is 107 deaths a day. 

Yesterday, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said after showing a downward trend of daily Covid-19 cases for four consecutive days, infections spiked up to 19,495 cases in the last 24 hours. – September 16, 2021.
