Sarawak logs record 5,291 new Covid infections

SARAWAK reported a record number of Covid-19 infections today at 5,291, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today. 

The number of infections in the state has been on an upward trajectory since July despite more than 60% of its population already being fully vaccinated. 

As of this afternoon, Noor Hisham said 19,198 new infections were reported taking the cumulative number of cases since the start of the epidemic to 1,979,698.

Coming behind Sarawak is Selangor with 2,347 cases, followed by Johor with 2,110 cases. 

Other states that recorded more than 1,000 cases are Sabah (1,717), Kedah (1,256), Penang (1,309), Kelantan (1,435) and Perak (1,118).

Other states that reported cases are Kuala Lumpur (376), Negri Sembilan (283), Malacca (340), Pahang (584), Terengganu (930), Perlis (67) and Putrajaya (32). 

Labuan has the lowest number of infections at three. 

Noor Hisham said as of 5pm yesterday, intensive care unit bed capacity is at 78%. 

The Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply said as of yesterday, a total of 17,026,781 individuals or 72.7% of the country’s adult population have completed their Covid-19 vaccination. 

Meanwhile, 90.9% of the adult population have received at least one dose, including recipients of the CanSino single-dose vaccine.

This brings the total number of doses dispensed since the start of the vaccination programme in February to 38,260,575. – September 12, 2021.
