A SINGAPOREAN envoy’s courtesy visit to Najib Razak’s home is fuelling speculation that the disgraced former prime minister could have a major role in the new Ismail Sabri Yaakob government.

The former prime minister had posted a picture of him with Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon yesterday.

“Hopefully the relationship between Malaysia and Singapore will remain strong in the current economic situation,” he wrote in the post.

“Policies and connectivity between the two countries that benefit investors, efforts to curb the spread of the pandemic… must be further enhanced.”

The meeting between the prime minister and with the high commissioner have further fuelled speculation that Najib will be made an economic adviser to the cabinet.

Najib, who is facing multiple corruption charges in relation to sovereign wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), also met with Ismail on September 7.

Ismail’s appointment as the ninth prime minister followed the ouster of Muhyiddin Yassin, which paved the way for Umno to return to power.

Najib said he had discussed the economy and measures for its recovery in the meeting with the prime minister.

Najib said he hopes his suggestions, strategies and experience will be employed to help the nation towards economic recovery.

“My principles are clear. If there’s a chance to do better, I will propose it. If it’s wrong, I will oppose it. If it’s a good idea, I will support it,” he wrote on Facebook at the time. – September 10, 2021.
