20,988 new Covid-19 cases, record numbers in 3 states

While Selangor continues to log the highest number of Covid-19 cases by state, Sarawak, Kedah and Terengganu hit new highs in the past 24 hours. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, September 2, 2021.

AFTER a dip in Covid-19 cases yesterday, Malaysia was back reporting daily cases in the range of 20,000 as the Health Ministry recorded 20,988 infections in the past 24 hours.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the new infections brought the overall cases in the country to 1,786,004.

He said Selangor remained the state reporting the highest daily cases with 4,073 infections, followed by Sarawak with 2,992 cases and Kedah with 2,455 cases.

Sabah dropped to fourth with 2,329 cases.

Meanwhile, Sarawak and Kedah reported a record number of infections.

Sarawak’s previous high was 2,548 cases reported on August 20, while Kedah’s record was 2,279 logged on August 25.

Another state that reported a new high was Terengganu with 987 cases. The north-eastern state’s previous high was 883 cases reported on July 31.

Other states reporting new cases were Johor (2,145), Penang (1,600), Kelantan (1,247), Perak (990), Kuala Lumpur (731), Pahang (599), Malacca (407), Negri Sembilan (301), Perlis (90), Putrajaya (37) and Labuan (five).

The combined cases in the Klang Valley alone, including Putrajaya, was 4,841 or 23% of the total number of infections today.

On vaccination, Malaysia dispensed 398,134 Covid-19 shots yesterday, taking the total number of jabs administered to 35.2 million.

To date, 15.2 million adults (65.1%) have been vaccinated while 19.9 million people (85.1% of adults) have received one dose, according to data from the Special Committee on Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply. – September 2, 2021.
