5,526 fully vaccinated people contract Covid-19, 65 in ICU

AS many as 5,526 Covid-19 cases reported today were breakthrough infections with 65 of the patients admitted into intensive care units (ICU), Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Out of the 65 in ICU, 12 are critically ill (Category 5) and require ventilator support, while 53 have pneumonia and are given oxygen support (Category 4).

The 65 cases are the highest since the Health Ministry started releasing the infection data among those who are vaccinated.

The previous high was 56 cases reported on August 26, where 36 were in Category 5 and 20 were in Category 4.

Forty-eight vaccinated patients were reported to be in Category 3 after contracting pneumonia.

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said that a bulk of cases among those vaccinated were asymptomatic (Category 1) and had mild symptoms (Category 2).

There were 2,481 cases in Category 1 and 2,932 cases in Category 2.

Noor Hisham said 15,371 or 73.6% of the positive cases today were either not vaccinated or had only received one dose of the vaccine.

The special committee for Covid-19 vaccine access (JKJAV) said a total of 361,381 Covid-19 jabs were dispensed yesterday, taking the total number of doses administered to 34.38 million.

The committee said that of the doses administered yesterday, 181,281 people received their first shot while 180,100 had their second jab. – August 31, 2021.
