We do not have an alliance with Umno, says PAS

THERE is no secret alliance with Umno, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, in rubbishing rumours that his party was in cahoots with the ruling party to face the 14th general election.

Hadi said PAS was taking on Umno in all 45 state seats in Kelantan and that there was no truth to talk that the Malay party was giving it a walkover.

“It is not true,” Hadi said in response to claims that the two traditional rivals had formed an unofficial pact for GE14.

PAS’ opposition rivals in Pakatan Harapan have repeatedly claimed that its former ally was secretly working with Umno in a bid to split the votes against the ruling party.

This is because in past elections, Umno and the coalition it leads, Barisan Nasional (BN), have always won seats in fights against more than one opposition party.

Claims had also surfaced that in return for an alliance, Umno would either field weak candidates or not contest against PAS in Kelantan, where the party has ruled since the 1990 election.

Whistleblower site Sarawak Report had previously said that PAS had received RM90 million from Umno president Najib Razak.

Hadi had denied Sarawak Report’s claims and is suing the website’s editor, Claire Rewcastle Brown.

Talk of a secret alliance intensified after Hadi and Najib shared the same stage at two events – a dinner with Al-Azhar University alumni and a rally for Rohingnya rights.

PAS had severed ties with PH parties PKR and DAP in 2015 over the former’s campaign to implement the Islamic penal code, called hudud, in Kelantan.

The Islamist party had always stressed that it was leading an independent opposition coalition, called Gagasan Sejahtera Rakyat, in GE14 that will take on both BN and PH.

In explaining his two programmes with Umno, Hadi said they were based on general issues that were dear to both parties, such as the welfare of Muslims.

“On issues such as Palestine and the Rohingnya, we can sit down and talk. But in the election, we are fighting them. So how are we going to work with them?” Hadi said.

“We are going to contest all seats (in Kelantan).” – January 21, 2018.

  • He is lying and he knows it even if he has convinced himself otherwise. Lying Ulamas - theocracy in Malaysia has already proven failure even before they start.
