PRIME Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced his cabinet of 30 ministers to help with his administration, preferring to continue with the experiment of having four senior ministers, and without a deputy prime minister.

He also retained almost all the same faces from Muhyiddin Yassin’s cabinet, bringing in a small number of new faces, and swapped portfolios for some.

The four senior ministers remained the same as in the previous administration – International Trade and Industry Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Works Minister Fadillah Yusof and Education Minister Mohd Radzi Jidin.

As for the Finance Ministry portfolio, Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz retains his previous post.

The biggest changes are Khairy Jamaluddin being made health minister while Dr Adham Baba is now science, technology and innovation minister.

The new faces included in the line up are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Idris Ahmad, Federal Territories Minister Shahidan Kassim, Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Rural and Regional Development Minister Mahdzir Khalid.

Those dropped from the cabinet were ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof (special functions) and Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri (religious affairs), as well as Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, who was plantation and commodities minister.

Ismail announced his line-up in a special press conference at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya today.

The previous Perikatan Nasional administration had 32 ministers.

Ismail said the cabinet line-up formed today was a management team that will work with the people.

“This cabinet needs to act swiftly and integrate in an effort to free Malaysia from the threat of the Covid-19 outbreak, economic and political turmoil.”

  • Ismail Sabri is playing it safe without antagonizing more parties than required. Umno has been thrown a carrot or two and nothing else. Although this Cabinet will come in for much criticism in the ensuing hours, for Sabri at least it is the best (and safest) pick in a landmine-filled field.
