Malaysia hits new high of 393 Covid-19 deaths

MALAYSIA today reported a new record in daily Covid-19 deaths with 393 cases, taking the overall fatality number past the 15,000 mark. 

Earlier today, the Health Ministry also reported a new high of 24,599 daily Covid-19 cases.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the fatalities recorded in the past 24 hours brought the death toll to 15,211.

The last time the country reported record-high deaths on a single day was on August 8, when 360 people died of the disease. 

On a more positive note, the number of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) dropped to 990, the lowest in nearly a month.

Likewise, the number of patients requiring respiratory support also reduced to 487.

There were 970 ICU cases on July 25 and 468 patients on ventilator support on July 24.

Elaborating on the deaths, Noor Hisham said 294 of them were Malaysians.

He said that 100 cases were pronounced dead-on-arrival (DOA) where 50 involved Malaysians and the other 50 foreigners. 

A total of 328 victims had underlying medical conditions. 

Meanwhile, Selangor recorded the most number of deaths at 125, while Kuala Lumpur trailed behind with 61 fatalities and Johor came third in the list with 48 deaths. 

Other states reporting deaths were Malacca (33), Penang (31), Sabah (26), Negri Sembilan (20), Kedah and Perak (15 each), Kelantan (nine), Pahang (eight) and Terengganu (two). – August 26, 2021.
