A PETALING Jaya councillor and another individual who took part in the candlelight vigil for victims of Covid-19 last week claimed trial at the magistrates’ court for disorderly conduct at a police station.

Selangor Wanita DAP secretary Nalina Nair was charged along with Sujatra Jayarah under Section 90 of the Police Act for committing the offence at the Dang Wangi police station on August 19.

Nalina’s not-guilty plea was recorded before magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin, while Sujatra’s plea was recorded before magistrate Wong Chai Sia.

Tawfiq allowed Nalina to post bail of RM5,000 with one surety and Wong fixed bail of RM2,000 with a surety for Sujatra.

If convicted, Nalina and Sujatra face a maximum fine of RM500 or six months’ jail.

The court set October 1 for mention.

The two were among 31 individuals who were arrested for participating at the vigil held at Dataran Merdeka.

The 31 protestors were also fined RM2,000 each for violating Covid-19 standard operating procedure.

Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR), the group behind the vigil, appealed for funds via crowdfunding to pay for the fines and managed to raised RM92,800. – August 26, 2021.

  • These charges were made post facto after they were denied legal access, and their detention was made without due process, right?

We appear to have clowns masquerading as policemen.
