GRAPHIC artist and activist Fahmi Reza’s sedition case involving the Raja Permaisuri Agong’s portrait has been dropped and classified as No Further Action (NFA).

Fahmi said this in a Facebook post today, adding that he was informed by police that the investigation papers had been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers but were later marked “NFA”.

In April, the graphic designer who uses satire as political commentary, created a design using Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Mainunah Iskandariah’s portrait with the caption “Dengki ke” (Are you jealous?) on Facebook.

The portrait was also used on a Spotify playlist he curated, but which was later removed by the music streaming service.

The reference and image of the queen pertains to an exchange between her and a follower on the royal’s personal Instagram account after she had posted about several dishes the palace kitchen had cooked.

The follower asked the queen if her chefs had received unapproved Covid-19 vaccines, to which the queen replied: “Dengki ke?”

Not long after the post went viral, social media users began using the #dengkike hashtag, which trended on social media. The queen then temporarily deactivated her Instagram account.

Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhil Shaari of PAS lodged a police report, alleging that Fahmi had insulted the monarchy.

Fahmi today described the development as a small victory.

“Small victory for the freedom of speech, expression and satire,” Fahmi said.

“To the PAS Member of Parliament who lodged the report against me for my #Dengkike satire, please don’t be koyak (torn or, in slang, upset),” he said.

He also told Fadhli to stop lodging police reports and to respect freedom of expression.

Fahmi has been called in for questioning by the police at least seven times this year over various satirical artworks featuring politicians and public personalities. – August 24, 2021.
