New Covid-19 cases drop to 17,672

There were 17,672 new Covid-19 cases reported in the past 24 hours, with Selangor still the state with highest infectivity and 4,316 cases registered. – The Malaysian Insight pic, August 23, 2021.

MALAYSIA reported 17,672 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the lowest in the past 13 days. 

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the cases today brought the nation’s caseload to 1,572,765. 

The last time Malaysia logged fewer cases was on August 9 with 17,236 cases.

Selangor remained the state with highest infectivity as of noon today with 4,316 cases. However, the figure was also its lowest in the past 41 days. 

It was on July 12 that the state reported fewer cases, with 4,308 cases.

The Klang Valley, including Putrajaya, contributed 5,231 cases, with Kuala Lumpur logging 891 cases and Putrajaya with 24. 

Sabah was second behind Selangor on the list of most infections with 2,474 cases, followed by Kedah with 1,602 cases. 

Other states that were seeing a steady rise in infections recently and continued to report more than 1,000 daily cases today were Sarawak (1,538), Penang (1,451), Johor (1,367) and Kelantan (1,176).

States and territories besides Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with fewer than 1,000 cases were (in descending order) Perak (952), Pahang (506), Negri Sembilan (478), Terengganu (470), Malacca (363), Perlis (57) and Labuan (seven). 

On overall cases by state, Selangor topped the chart with 561,826 cases, a vast difference to second-placed Kuala Lumpur and third-placed Sabah, which has 165,412 and 124,412 cases respectively. 

Meanwhile, the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply today said that 441,100 doses were administered yesterday, of which 303,545 were second doses while 137,555 were first jabs.

In total, 31.28 million shots have been administered since the vaccination drive began on February 24. This means 55.6% of the adult population in Malaysia are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19 after receiving two doses of the vaccine. – August 23, 2021.
