Ismail Sabri sworn in as 9th PM

UMNO vice president Ismail Sabri Yaakob took his oath of office as the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara this afternoon.

The Agong appointed Ismail as the new prime minister in accordance with Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the federal constitution.

His appointment comes after the resignation of Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday, after Muhyiddin lost his slim majority in Parliament.

Ismail, 61, is the third person to serve as prime minister since the 2018 general election.

He is also the first leader to be born after the country’s independence in 1957. 

Dressed in a black baju Melayu and gold-embroidered black samping, Ismail was accompanied by his wife Muhaini Zainal Abidin and his children.

After taking his oath, Ismail signed the instruments of appointment, which was witnessed by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali.

Also present in the swearing-in ceremony were the immediate former prime minister Muhyiddin, former prime minister and Barisan Nasional adviser Najib Razak, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MCA president Wee Ka Siong, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, MIC deputy president M. Saravanan, and Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun, among others. 

The Agong will be meeting with the party leaders present after the photo op session with the newly minted prime minister. – August 21, 2021.
