Record tumbles again with 23,564 new Covid-19 cases

COVID-19 numbers continued to spike today, with 23,564 Covid-19 cases reported over the past 24 hours, taking the nation’s caseload past 1.5 million, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This is the third day in a row Covid-19 cases have risen to new levels. Selangor logged most new infections by state today with 6,974 cases.

Sabah reported 2,738 cases, a new high for the state, surpassing its previous high of 2,538 cases logged yesterday, while Sarawak’s 2,548 cases today is roughly 60% higher than its previous high of 1,566 cases on Monday.

Other states reporting new cases are Kedah (1,932), Kuala Lumpur (1,652), Penang (1,523), Johor (1,323), Kelantan (1,281), Perak (1,248), Malacca (610), Negri Sembilan (608), Pahang (517), Terengganu (521).

Perlis reported 64 cases and Putrajaya 24 cases, while Labuan only reported one fresh case.

Based on the figures, the Klang Valley, including Putrajaya accounted for 8,650 of the total cases today.

With the addition of the new cases today, the overall cases for Selangor is now at 545,120 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 162,302 cases and Johor with 117,990 cases.

Overall national caseload is 1,513,024.

Healthcare workers administered 517,692 Covid-19 vaccination jabs yesterday, 180,810 of which were second doses and 336,882, first doses.

In total, the country has administered 29.9 million Covid-19 doses, dispensing the first shot to 17.8 million people, or 54.5% of the population, and inoculating 12 million, or 37% of the population. – August 20, 2021.
